There is a lot of debate on this question right now. Is it really possible to have your computer, cell phone, etc in a green world? I think it is possible to have all of our modern conveniences without sacrificing the planet we live on. It all comes down to changing the way those devices are made; everything from the manufacture of parts to final sale can be "greened". It won't be easy and it won't be cheap, but it must be done in order to break the cycle.
Here's some examples of changes that can be made. Plastics: everything is made from plastic today. But did you know that there are companies out there making plastic from corn? In our current disposable society, this is a no brainer. If we're going to continue using plastic, why shouldn't it be made from something that is easily grown, harvested and recyclable/compostable. Energy: our manufacturing plants should all be using solar and/or wind energy. In fact, every retail center should be using solar and wind as well. Transportation: there is a lot to be said about our transportation options in this country. If we created more products here, we could reduce our oil consumption dramatically. Our products wouldn't have to travel as far, so they could be shipped via train instead of boat or plane.
At home, we can make changes to green up our connections. The obvious option of course is your own energy supply. I purchased a rather inexpensive solar charger for my cell phone. I leave it in the sun for a couple of hours and then plug my phone into it. This way I don't have to plug it into the wall. You can get solar chargers for your laptop, cell phone, just about any device. If you really want to go all the way, you can have solar installed in your home and power everything from the sun.
These changes need to happen and soon. But they won't happen unless you demand more responsibility from the manufacturers you buy products from. If you buy a product and feel that the packaging is excessive, call their customer service number and let them know what you think. That is why they have a customer service line. And don't forget, you can't expect others to make changes if you don't make them first. Be the change you want to see in the world.
